I began tie-dyeing to create fabrics that could interact playfully with the plaids and prints I was using in my clothing line. At first I used them as lining and details, and this year I created a line of tie-dyed basics and accent pieces inspired by Hubble telescope photos of worlds being born and stars dying. I love the process of tie-dyeing, the balance of control, chance and chaos inherent in it. I began with a few women's pieces, and have been slowly adding men's clothes, accessories and soon baby clothes, to my online store www.shop.shabdismyname.com, as well as selling to designer boutiques across the US and in Japan.
I use the Dharma Procion dyes for the quality, variety and versatility of them; I've used them in tie-dyeing, tub dyeing and hand painting (with the aid of urea, sodium alginate and Dharma's brushes and tools). I love the many different blanks they offer at reasonable prices. I love the way they have everything you need to learn, play, and manufacture available in one easy to use website. But mostly I love their commitment to creating an ethical and pleasant experience from start to finish - it puts my mind at ease to know that I am selling products that come from ethical sources, and it is invaluable to deal with the friendly and knowledgable staff who have helped me troubleshoot my way through so many projects. Thank you for making me want to come back time after time!
