I have been working with the batik process longer than I would care to admit. People I haven't seen in years ask me "Are you still tie-dyeing?" Well batik is not quite the same as tie-dye and I still think about a real job.
Batik is a process of applying hot wax (a resist) to a fabric and dyeing the fabric. Besides dyeing I also paint and spray the dye directly on the fabric.
I work mostly on
cotton knit clothing purchased from Dharma. I use
Procion Fiber Reactive Dye and a combination of
waxes.
In the process of dyeing usually some dye creeps under the hot wax giving an interesting half tone and upredictable results. I have garments ranging from tiny baby sizes to 4XL adult.
I sell mostly at art fairs, some by mail, and some from my home.
