Also known as "China Silk", these lightweight and breezy blank Habotai scarves are the most popular for dyeing and painting, probably because they are the most economical of all the silks. That also makes these very popular with teachers for class projects, Mother's day gifts, etc. Silk painting instructors often choose these for their student's first projects. The price is right for big fund raisers too! They make the perfect weight scarf for summer wear. "Playsilks" are very popular with the kids right now, and these are what are usually used. These have hand rolled hems with 100% silk thread. Ready to dye and paint! We also have a few sizes in black, by popular demand. They look great when used with some of our more opaque or metallic fabric paints or the foils. Some folks use them with discharge techniques too. Just keep in mind that there is never a guarantee that a black will always discharge, because especially with imported stuff, the dye they are using can change. Also, the color you get when you discharge can vary widely, from a light tan to a dark rust brown. Always best to test if you want to discharge a black garment or fabric. We recommend, especially if you are re-selling, to pre-wash in Hot water and Synthrapol or our Professional Textile Detergent, all silk before dyeing or painting to remove any leftover residue from the silk worms (Seracin) or finger prints and other stuff that can cause the fabric to dye unevenly. The thicker habotai is preferable from my point of view, however it is a personal preference.

I have been actively dyeing these for 2.5 years and although I sell many of them I also wear them daily - so I'm giving feedback from both perspectives.
The fabric is beautiful! It dyes well and easily (FYI - I use the microwave method listed in the How-To's). The finished products are gorgeous, professional-looking pieces. Without reservation I recommend these. That said, here are a few things to be aware of (please note I didn't feel any of them warranted lowering my rating - so these are simply FYI's for you). 1) Every once and a while one slips in that accidentally was sewn with a thread that won't dye - if that happens - let Dharma know and they will replace it - it should not be that way. 2) I find that during the dyeing process about 30% of the time the tag comes at least partially off - I don't care and have not found that my customers do so I don't find this a big deal just mentioning it. 3) Finally, it is hand sewn, so you do find some imperfections, but they are minor and so I just warn customers that is part of what they may find and advise they simply gently trim any loose threads. Again - this is a fabulous product - I've dyed hundreds of these guys by hand (and the 5mm ones). Highly recommend! Was this review helpful?

i have dyed over 1,000 of these over five years as playsilks so i know the product well. as others said the price is good. HOWEVER, the quality has gone down particularly in the last couple years. there are less stitches in the hand rolled hems and it is becoming RARE to wash and dry a silk WITHOUT having the hem unroll in one or more spots. very disappointing. i have called and complained to no avail. please consider how you can up the quality of the work on these dharma! I bought these (24" & 31" squares, I think) to use as playsilks for my little girl. We received them much sooner than I expected ~thanks! Her brothers and I dyed them with koolaid - which was great fun. They turned out beautifully. We are quite pleased & are trying to think of some other little girl we can buy more for :-)

This product (2008) is not up to professional standards. Many breaks in the hems after one washing and worst of all, the hem thread is not silk and will not dye with french or jacquard silk dyes but stays white. Very disappointing and $ lost.

I have ordered many of these silks for dyeing (with the silk thread for hems) and they've been great to work with. I'm pretty hard on them to dye them and they seem to hold up beautifully. I can't speak for long term use as I dye these and then they're out of my hands lol BUT from what I can tell - they're wonderful.

This fabric is beautiful. It's so sheer you can see through it. It drapes, flows, gleams, and is in all ways beautiful and just what the mind pictures when you say "silk scarf". The hems are nicely finished and held up well to its first washing.

A very nice item to dye, my customers all seem to notice the quality of the silk and the hand hemming and how well it shines with dyeing. I also use black for discharge and over dyeing. I do very well them.

Wonderful, as always. Well woven fabric, quality rolled seams, takes dye well provided they are laundered before hand. If I don't launder these well, I have trouble with gummy spots in the fabric and little places near the seam that don't take the dye as well.

These are great when you think how inexpensive they are! I think I have had one with poly thread once, the rest have been fine. And when you consider the hemming is done by hand, I can't complain about that either! These take the dye beautifully, and if you follow that old adage "you get what you pay for", I get more than I pay for with Dharma's habotai scarves! My students love them too.

These dye really well with acid dyes, natural dyes and procion dyes. I sunpainted last summer and the results were great and I am waiting for the arrival of the sun so I can do some more.

I did find that some of the hems were missing stitches,so I had to take the time to stitch myself which slowed up my progress. Other than that, the quality of the scarves is great.

the quality of the fabric is OK but after dying and washing process, the stitching came out of 1/3 of the scarves. the stitching on many of the others is irregular and look poorly made. I would hesitate to purchase this product again

I have been sunprinting them and they were a huge hit at the farmer's market. They are so pretty flapping in the breeze and attract a lot of customers. I love the good quality at an inexpensive price. There's no way I could hem silk so beautifully without taking hours.

These Habotai silks are the greatest. I do rust dyeing, herbal and natural dyeing and the process I use bring out the best colors - I cannot keep any of the silks in stock.

Wonderful to dye for those who like immediate gratification. About three hours from start to finish. You do have to wait til they cool from the microwave. When wet they are very clingy. If dry very slippery.

These are the ones which are selling well. I am not sure if I should get larger ones or stick to the two sizes I have. The price I can charge is not too expensive for the average customer, which is who I hope to attract.

Consistent quality in your scarf blanks - and I love that they are hemmed with silk thread (nothing is more discouraging than dying a beautiful scarf and having white thread screaming out from the hems)

Hem is done with a thread that is not good quality and it shows when the scarf is already finished because it doesnt take the dyes evenly. Is there a way to ask your supplier to improve the thread?

I have not yet done the painting on these that I had planned.( A friend was ordering paints and that fell through due to life issues) I have recently(2 days ago)been able to order painting supplies so intend to be able to complete this project soon.I do not expect any problems.

The thread used to hem the edges is not natural/ silk and does not absorb the dye! Therefore, the painted the thread remains while. Also the hems unthread easily and fall apart.

This silk has been perfect for my projects. It is easy to work with and accepts the dyes and paints beautifully. I can't wait to incorporate it into a special project with my class. When I showed my students the wedding chuppah (canopy) my husband and I designed, they couldn't wait to start designing something special for the school.

Sizes on the scarves are questionable. A square scarf may not actually be a square scarf. Reminds me of lumber, where a "2x4" is not actually two inches by four inches.

These are ready to dye, take on bright colors. After setting the dye, they are soft silk. I am proud to give each as a gift.

Very long, they take a nice color on the dye. The edges are finished, and they're inexpensive enough to use as testers.

Great product. I only wish the "made in China" tag was more often consistently detachable, without damaging the rolled hem. I find 1 out of 4 or 5 is sewn with an independent thread.

The scarves cam out in beautiful colors and took the dye very well. I ordered a few black scarves and as luck would have it they were a set that the color could not be removed from. I will find something to do with them.

Smoth, soft, silky (LOL). These scarves take the dye and hold it, stretch well and the gutta tubes slide right along with no surface snags to mar the application. They feel wonderful and the quality is superb. Plus economical enough to resell after decoration.

I wish you could attach the tag so that it did not compromise the scarf stitch when it is removed...or am I doing something wrong?....I use these more and more with my preschool creative art students and they are a huge hit, not only with the children but their moms love them too and are always borrowing the 'wall hanging' art they made.

I think I'll opt for another scarf next time. It dyes nicely, but the threads have separated in places and it's hard to keep wrinkle free. Fine, however, considering the price I paid for them.

We use hundreds of these scarves every year at camp. They are economical, allowing us to expose many children to high quality techniques such as painting with Seta Silk and shibori, not merely the classic tie-dye of every other camp.

ONLY PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS THAT SOME OF THE ROLLED HEM SEEMS TO BE TWISTED AT TIMES. YOU HAVE A WRONG & RIGHT SIDE ON THE SAME SIDE. ALSO, THE THREAD DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE THE COLOR OF THE PAINT. PRICE IS GREAT & SHIPPING IS ALWAYS FASTER THAN I CAN BELIEVE.

Great quality and easy to color using Jacquard Silk Colors (Green Label. I'm an idiot and was able to do it with no problems! Just make certain you buy Jacquard Silk Colors Dyeset Fixative to lock the colors in! The colors are GREAT! I use them in my Magic Act (www.magicbykel.com) and have saved TONS of money making my own "Magic Silks". 10 STARS (if possible) !!!!!

These were so lovely to dye -- very very easy to rinse out, and the colors fully penetrated all of the fabric. Definitely my favorite tie-dye project.
