These hats give great coverage and aren't hard to collapse once you get the trick. (My daughter has been doing it since she was about seven.) They're also incredibly easy to tuck away in your bag, so you won't get caught in the sun without one, and the chin strap keeps them in place under windy conditions. The metal rim can indeed rust and in fact I just unearthed some I had stored in a plastic bin for a couple of years and saw spots of rust along the rim. However, we just dyed them with dark colors and/or reddish colors and it wasn't really noticeable. After the soda ash soak, we opened them up and squirted them with blobs, lines, and dots of dye—no tying needed. I suggest you leave them unfolded during the 24 hour dye-setting period and wash/rinse them in a bathtub. Fight the temptation to zip them into their cases and throw them in the washing machine. I lost my first one that way. Oh, and the fabric does shrink a bit, which can sometimes deform the flat circular rim into something resembling a Pringles potato crisp. When I see that happening, I stretch the fabric while it's still wet to return it to flat. We do have one hat that stayed somewhat deformed, but it still looked cute and folded up fine.
