For comfort there is nothing like fabrics that have the abilty to stretch with the movement of the human body. This is achieved in one of two main methods. The first is in knitted fabrics where the looping of the threads creates a natural stretch. Although good for T-shirts, sweaters, skirts and such, knits have a limited ability to return to shape if stretched too its limits. The second is where a small amount (3-10%) of the fiber used is a synthetic with high elasticity in both knit and woven fabric. Known as spandex, this rubberlike synthetic has the ability to stretch and return to its original length thus reducing the bagging of the knees in pants, and elbows in longer sleeves. In knits it is widely used in work out clothes, bathing suits, and in socks. Recently designers have been using spandex in woven fabrics, so they can make more form fitting and yet comfortable clothing with only a small spandex content, so the fabric still dyes beautifully.
