Big open check. This is a very open but crisply defined pattern, with
1/2" open spaces. The scale of repeat is 1.5" square, and it's woven with
2-ply yarn* for a smooth look.
We found a small village on the island of Java in Indonesia where the men handweave these cotton scarves and shawls on handmade wooden looms. The intricate openwork patterns have been handed down through the generations, father to son. The natural cotton thread is purchased in big "hanks" and wound onto spools using old bicycle rims. The loom is then "dressed" which is very time consuming. The weaving itself then goes relatively quickly. We are getting them in 11 patterns, each in 4 sizes. Being completely handmade, the charm is in the irregularities and the sizes are approximate. They can be dyed and tie-dyed with our Fiber Reactive dyes into any of 100 colors. Because of how long they take to make and get here, we can't be sure they will always be in stock, so get 'em while we got 'em.
*There are two types of cotton yarn used in these scarves,
1) "Singles" yarn, meaning single-ply yarn, is used in scarf styles 2, 7 and 9.
2) The other scarves are woven with a fine 2-ply yarn.
Due to the handmade nature of this item all sizes are approximate.
Shrinkage: Expect approximately 10% shrinkage in both directions, with hand
washing and line drying. Keep them away from your washer and dryer.
Each size has an additional 2-4 inch fringe on the two ends.

Even after scouring, this scarf did not want to dye--it was streaky and even the parts that took dye were very pale. I love the weave, it just was not dye happy.

Very beautiful, just not as sturdy as I would prefer for everyday use. I dyed it a light apricot color and it looks great, for a special occasion. The largest size would make splendid curtains, in my opinion.

The scarves are even more beautiful and scrumptious in real life. Can't wait to dye them and order more.

Go for the longest and widest scarves because there is a lot of shrinkage and once they are dyed/washed they crinkle up. Very pleased with this product.

soft and sheer, doesn't show pattern well but carries color so beautifully that it is worth the effort of finishing. the only real down side is that the fringes tangle easily.

I love this. Bought as a test and will get more. Get compliments every time I wear it, which is every day now that that spring is here. Warning: loose weave means it does snag on long-hanging earrings.

The weave was a little more open that what I thought it was going to be but they dyed really well and turned out very cute.
