Alter Ego Dye Scarf
by Janet & Cara
Materials (If you get a kit, it has everything you need except the scarf and pot!):
Devoré Satin Scarf
(#DCS), Delicate Floral Pattern - 14"x72" or other Devoré scarf of your choosing
Alter Ego Dye
(#AED), Passion(#2) and Zinnia(#53) or any 2 colors in the kit - choose 1 for rayon and 1 for silk
Alter Ego Dye Fixative
(#AEDF) - Can be ordered on the Alter Ego Dye page or comes in the kit
Salt
Vinegar
Measuring cup and pipette
Pot for dyeing
Procedure:
1. It helps to weigh your item because the dye quantity is based on that. Our scarf weighed 2 ounces. Pre-soak the item in lukewarm water.
2. Measure out your dyes after determining the quantity needed. We used 4 mls of each color, 6 drops each of vinegar and fixative and 5 mls of salt. The kit comes with these handy measuring cups and pipettes and a brochure is available that gives clear directions and easy recipes to get the look you want. We did find the dyes to be very concentrated, so a little goes a long way. With the kit, you could dye 36 scarves or more.
3. Add all the ingredients, stir, then add the wetted out fabric. If your scarf has fringe, you might want to loosely tie it before hand so it doesn't get tangled.
4. Stir for about 5 min. then turn up the heat so it comes to a simmer in about 20 min. Then turn off the heat and let it sit for 10 min.
5. Rinse and wash with Synthrapol detergent or a mild liquid dish soap, rinse again.
6. We then rolled the wet fabric in a dry towel to absorb the excess moisture and then ironed it dry. Voila! We love how our colors turned out and total time was less than one hour start to finish. Very easy, very exciting!
