Product Description

We had so many requests for these, we had to try them. Once you do, you'll be addicted to the incredible possibilities for creating your own complex cloth creations. The Paintstiks are real oil paint in a solid stick form. Quality pigments are mixed with special drying refined linseed oils in a highly refined wax base, and they can be used on a wide variety of surfaces like wood, metal and paper, and almost any type of fabric including natural or synthetics, leather or suede. Colors can be spread or blended with a knife, brush, or Colorless Blender. The colors are completely compatible and can be blended with each other. Use turpentine to thin. The Paintstik are "self-sealing" — just peel off the outer film before each use. Allow to dry (3-5 days), then iron to set the paint and make it wash fast on fabric. Also available are these incredible "rubbing plates" that allow you to create designs easily and quickly on fabric. It's a great way to add all-over design to a simple dyed silk scarf or low immersion dyed cotton fabric. You can also use them with stencils or rubber stamps or masking. The colors can be easily blended also. We have a great book, and/or DVD, shown above, for learning about many of the possibilities.

All colors of Shiva Professional Grade Artist's Paintstiks are AP non-toxic, with the exception of Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Deep, Cadmium Red Scarlet, Cadmium Yellow, and Cobalt Blue, which bear the ACMI Caution Label. Those particular colors are not intended for use by or for products for children 12 and under.

Instructions
Shiva PaintStiks - Instructions
"How-To" for Fabrics:
If using commercial fabrics or clothing prewash and press prior to application. When using your own hand-dyes it is best to use the paintsticks as a final layer. If you do overdye, the soda ash breaks down the paint and it washes off. It also helps to tape or pin down the fabric to give better control when applying the paintstick.
There is a thin skin that seals the surface of the paint that has to be removed by rubbing it off or peeling with a knife. Apply paint in the desired method (rubbing plates, stencil brushes, rubbing, or direct drawing). Allow to dry thoroughly, generally 3-5 days on fabric. Iron on the appropriate temperature setting for the fabric for 10-15 seconds per area until all of the design has been heat set. Use a press cloth or paper to protect iron and ironing board. Wash gently in cool to warm water to remove any residue.
Do not dry clean.

I had such a good experience with my first Paintstiks project that I wanted more colors. I like the way the colors layer. I would recommend against using Paintstiks on fabric with nap - I was working on brushed denim, and had some problems with pilling.

I'm new to paint sticks...just learning how to handle them and what they can do. They are THE answer sometimes for a small area where the dye didn't do what I wanted the first time. They can salvage an error in judgment. The only down side is it takes 4-5 days for the paint to dry and the smell to go away so I can complete the project. Patience is one of those things I strive for.

The more I use these the less I like them. They are too dry to go onto fabric smoothly, so they tug at the fabric as you work. I've tried stamping with them, but they are too dry for that as well. Stenciling seems to be the best but even then I'm fighting the fabric to make it stay inside the stencil's open area. I will stick with Lumiere and Neopaque for fabric designs that need this kind of coverage.

Great color, easy to use. Smelly.
Takes a while to dry.
May appear to be dry, but smear all over your iron.
Not my favorite medium, but good quality

These are great! Experiment though, softer cotton fabrics will not give a crisp line from your rubbing. The fabric will pick-up some paint as you go from one raised part of the plate to the next even if your fabric is stretched very tight. Silk is the best so far. I had some cotton with a sheen to it that worked nicely too. Now I will look and see if Dharma has something like this piece I bought years ago.

I have rendered about ten artworks, since receiving the Shiva Paint sticks. I am now a complete convert. They work superbly well with silk Dyes on Habotai Oil stick foreground, airbrush silk dye background. The result when steamed is striking. l would suggest good drawing skills to get full use of the limitless possibilities. Silk needs to be very tight to draw on. l use steam fix dyes, but could eliminate steaming,if painting with diffrent dyes or paint.
