Product Description

Horizontal shadow plaid. A fairly closed weave, with singles yarn*, comprised of 3/4" horizontal stripes of alternating dense and loose weave, and more subtle vertical stripes of the same width. The scale of repeat is 1.5" square. No open spaces.

We found a small village on the island of Java in Indonesia where the men handweave these cotton scarves and shawls on handmade wooden looms. The intricate openwork patterns have been handed down through the generations, father to son. The natural cotton thread is purchased in big "hanks" and wound onto spools using old bicycle rims. The loom is then "dressed" which is very time consuming. The weaving itself then goes relatively quickly. We are getting them in 11 patterns, each in 4 sizes. Being completely handmade, the charm is in the irregularities and the sizes are approximate. They can be dyed and tie-dyed with our Fiber Reactive dyes into any of 100 colors. Because of how long they take to make and get here, we can't be sure they will always be in stock, so get 'em while we got 'em.

*There are two types of cotton yarn used in these scarves,
1) "Singles" yarn, meaning single-ply yarn, is used in scarf styles 2, 7 and 9.
2) The other scarves are woven with a fine 2-ply yarn.

Due to the handmade nature of this item all sizes are approximate.
Shrinkage: Expect approximately 10% shrinkage in both directions, with hand washing and line drying. Keep them away from your washer and dryer.
Each size has an additional 2-4 inch "loose" fringe on the two ends.

I was as pretty as I had hoped it dyed up beautifully. Even though I had intended it as a gift I decided to keep it for myself. I will just have to make something else for that person.

These are amazing! Everyone loves them! They take colour so beautifully. The drape is gorgeous no matter how you wrap or tie it. Nice as shown but if you put them in the dryer they pucker up into a wonderful very trendy texture. They'll shrink a tad but you'll love the look!

Some of my study group preferred these because they are so open and inexpensive. I really liked the Open weave. These are a terrific length for the new styles of scarves.

Be sure to wash these in synthropol twice! They have a strange greasy residue on them. Ruined my first few attempts with resist spots. Also they come with large manufacturers tags that are sewn in very tightly on delicate weave. A bummer to get off time wasted. Even with procion dyes they only take a pastel color for the most part. They may be trendy but I will leave it to others to experiment with from now on.

So soft! So light! I am never going back to plain 'ol china silk. This stuff is worth the extra money you pay. I prefer the machine hemming to the hand hemming any day. I did not have a problem with the stitching not dying but I used acid dyes.

I ordered several different styles of these cotton scarves. Each is lovely. I've dyed a few with indigo which looks beautiful and enhanced the interesting woven textures and patterns. The only concern is that many of them had a faint mildew smell though this odor disappeared completely when the scarves were washed.I like the weight texture and drape of these cotton scarves very much.

These scarves are impossible. The loose weave is disturbed during the wash out leaving everything a bit stretched and the dye was resisted in little small random spots even after 2 prewashes and soda soak. I will defintately not be buying this item any longer
