Product Description

Big plaid. Stripes of 4" open weave alternate with stripes of 4" solid weave, intersecting in both directions to form a large-scaled plaid. The overal effect is moderately open. Yarn used is fine 2-ply*. The open spaces are 1/2" square.

We found a small village on the island of Java in Indonesia where the men handweave these cotton scarves and shawls on handmade wooden looms. The intricate openwork patterns have been handed down through the generations, father to son. The natural cotton thread is purchased in big "hanks" and wound onto spools using old bicycle rims. The loom is then "dressed" which is very time consuming. The weaving itself then goes relatively quickly. We are getting them in 11 patterns, each in 4 sizes. Being completely handmade, the charm is in the irregularities and the sizes are approximate. They can be dyed and tie-dyed with our Fiber Reactive dyes into any of 100 colors. Because of how long they take to make and get here, we can't be sure they will always be in stock, so get 'em while we got 'em.

*There are two types of cotton yarn used in these scarves,
1) "Singles" yarn, meaning single-ply yarn, is used in scarf styles 2, 7 and 9.
2) The other scarves are woven with a fine 2-ply yarn.

Due to the handmade nature of this item all sizes are approximate.
Shrinkage: Expect approximately 10% shrinkage in both directions, with hand washing and line drying. Keep them away from your washer and dryer.
Each size has an additional 2-4 inch "loose" fringe on the two ends.

From the photo I expected white not beige. I washed the scarf before dyeing it and it shrank and frayed. If I had been able to see a sample I could have avoided my problem. (Dharma Trading is still my go-to place for fiber art supplies.)

Very modern - can easily recreate a 'tartan' look with dye and print on this scarf.

When dyeing some of the scarves would shrink in certain places and not in others. Maybe I was doing something wrong but if you plan to deviateexperiment with different techniques be warned.

Dyed well in the procion dye bath. Just one small thing - the parts above and below the knots of the fringe doesn't take the dye very well so it's worth manipulating these by hand while it's dyeing to ensure saturation.

Beautiful fabulous texture dyes up great with the fiber reactive dyes. I wasn't careful and got the fringe tangled but it really still looks great-- the overall aesthetic is kind of an unfussy funky hippie vibe. The drape is a little stiff which makes it a substantial scarf suitable for a lot of the chunkier knots. Wears great.

Lots of people at the Farmer's Market like them and will probably buy later this Fall. However whatever you can do to minimize the moldy smell would be greatly appreciated.

Very loose weave. The open spaces almost seem too big.

The pattern of the weave is a little overwhelming--it gets in the way if you are interested in surface pattern design. Fiber quality and hand are very good.
