Glossary Definitions for Words beginning with "U"

Ultraviolet
(U.V.) Invisible radiation wavelengths from about 4 nanometers, on the border of the x-ray region, to about 380 nanometers, just beyond the violet in the visible spectrum. This frequency of light is considered the culprit in color fading as well as causing skin cancer.
Union Cloth
A plain weave fabric made from two or more different fibers, usually cotton and linen.
Union Dye
Certain Dyes for multipurpose uses and on various fibers. Also known as all-purpose dye.
Urethane Upholstery
Fabric that has a resin backing made from polyester or polyether that is bonded to cotton backing.
Urea
A synthetic nitrogen compound used as a moisture drawing agent that keeps the fabric damp longer during the fixing process for tie-dyeing. It is a synthetic nitrogen compound used as a humectant in printing and painting with all classes of dyes. It also increases the solubility of dyes.
UV Resistance
The amount of resistance a fabric has to deterioration from sunlight exposure.
