Lynda Heines

My passion for ice dyeing started in October of 2010 when I was interviewing a fabric artist for my newspaper column. I was so excited about her passion, snow dyeing, that the following January after a big snow storm I bought three fiber reactive dyes, gathered some snow, and dyed my first ever piece of fabric. I fell in love! But then the snow was gone. I wanted so much to continue snow dyeing, and since I knew that snow was made of ice crystals, I thought that ice cubes would also work. And ice dyeing was born.
I wrote the first article on ice dyeing, which appeared in Quilting Arts August/September 2011 issue, and taught a webinar in June 2013 on that topic. I have continued ice dyeing, working on resolving problems I've been asked via my website. My online class, Icy Delights: Dyeing Fabric With Ice is available at lyndaheines.com
In addition to playing with ice and dye. I also love working with other ways to change the look of the fabric's surface including, but not limited to, sun printing, soy wax batik, discharge, gelatin printing, thermofax screen-printing with dye attractant and inks, and marbling. I also love using all kinds of tools for marking the fabric from potato mashers and wood printing blocks to doilies and lace.
Most of my fabric surface design supplies come from Dharma. For ice dyeing I use Dharma's Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, Professional Textile Detergent, Deluxe Rubber Respirator, silk and scarves and ponchos and other natural fiber clothing blanks. I appreciate Dharma Trading and happily refer my students of my local dyeing classes to Dharma for their supplies.
