Artist Bio / Statement
My name is Terry Tarnow and I have been a fiber artist for over 50 years graduating with a BFA from Wayne State University in Detroit with a major in weaving in 1970. I am active in Fiber Arts guilds in Michigan and Oregon. I love all fiber arts and besides weaving I spin, knit, quilt, felt and love to dye. My favorite techniques are on and off loom Shibori and more recently ice dyeing.
I have been buying my supplies from Dharma for about 25 years. Scarf blanks, bamboo socks, garment blanks, fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, silk dyes, pre reduced indigo and everything needed for the process. More recently, with the discovery of ice dyeing, like many of us, I have a new addiction. I’m lucky 4 of started an ice dye study group where we have learned so much from each other. Last fall I decided I needed to take my ice dyeing and combine it with my weaving. I have woven a few scarves and shawls using cotton, bamboo or silk warps and various wefts, rayon chenille, rayon boucle and linen. This is just the beginning of what I hope will be many years of projects.
I create because I love to, I don’t have a web site and only sell in galleries and give away as gifts or donate to nonprofits. I teach classes as a local arts council. Before I retired I was store manager/buyer for the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City. The Dennos has one of the largest collections of Canadian Inuit Art in the U.S. I was so lucky in those 27 years to be exposed to amazing artists from around the world. In addition I am on the board of the Michigan Legacy Art Park and the Northland Weavers and Fiber Art Guild and volunteer for other organizations.
