Curtis Nouchi
Toru Dye

My name is Curtis Nouchi, and I'm an artist, craftsman, and maker based in Los Angeles, CA. I graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA with a degree in crafts, specializing in fibers. In addition to working on my own artwork, I've been dyeing and selling scarves through etsy and at various flea markets in LA. My dye work is primarily with fiber reactive and acid dyes on silk, cotton, and rayon. Although I use a variety of dye and resist techniques, my favorite has to be shibori. There is always something beautiful about unfolding or unbinding a multicolored lump of cloth to reveal an intricate map or imprint of the physical actions that made it. I am inspired by traditional Japanese shibori, especially with indigo on the kimono (although I seldom use indigo), but try to also use colors, patterns, and methods that feel more contemporary. I've been using Dharma's Silk Scarves and have recently started working with the Bamboo Rayon and Hand woven cotton. I've had beautiful results so far and am looking forward to experimenting with more fabrics!
