I have been a textile designer for almost 30 years and have been interested in patterns and mark making for as long as I can remember.
I stumbled upon the natural dyeing process when teaching in the fashion and textile design department at the University of Technology in Sydney about five years ago. This resulted in an obsession with exploring the harmonious colours that have been provided to us by nature. In my practice I combine the colours of nature with the traditional folding methods of the traditional Japanese technique known as shibori. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition between control and happy accident and the fortuitous results that transpire during the process.
Each of my pieces is individually dyed as a piece of fabric and each piece tells me the context in which it will be used. Some become garments whilst others become wall art pieces. I then make them up into the final piece. Therefore each one is an individual with its own marks, its indelible narrative.
