Michael Skyka

I live in the State of Maine and am inspired by the change of seasons, the pristine landscape, and the abundance of nature. I have created a large body of work from my travels to the Greek islands of Crete, Samos, and especially Skopelos where I studied at The Island Center for the Arts.

I envision colors, flora, fauna, and landscapes as inspiration for wearable art. I paint watercolors and hand-painted silk fabric. I sew this fabric into garments of my own design. I strive to design both unique and inventive but also comfortable apparel for my clientele.

For my silks I like to use Dharma's 54", 12mm Chiffon, 45", 12mm C.D.C., and Stretch Charmeuse, which, I usually buy by the bolt, for the best price.When I can afford it , I like to compliment my line with any of their varieties of silk blends.I have been using Dharma's Vertical Electric Steamer 20 years also.

I feel a distinct sense of accomplishment when I see a piece of my painted fabric on its new owner. This is the pleasure and enchantment of wearable art.

Biography:

Michael graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 1989 with a B.F.A. in Design. While spending a year at Parsons School of Design in NYC, he learned the craft of hand-painting on silk while working as an assistant to fashion designer Michael Katz(1987-1990). Painting silk yardage, fashion illustration, and all aspects of the exciting atmosphere of a specialty, couture fashion house awakened a passion for the process and performance of wearable art.

In 1998, he opened Pony Studio specializing in hand-painted silk fashion design located in the bustling Art Deco district of South Beach, Florida. The tropical flora and exuberance of the cultures and nightlife of Miami greatly inspired the work of this period. He developed a devoted following of International clientele seeking a standout piece for a special event, or a favorite dress to be worn again. Clients cherished his designs for the gorgeous original prints, feminine silhouette, comfort and handmade quality. He produced a yearly resort fashion show, and was featured in Ocean Drive Magazine.

In 2005, wanting to be closer to family, Shyka relocated his studio to Maine, where he is currently located. He now focuses primarily on producing hand-painted silk print designs for the international textile market. He is represented by Sandra Nunes of Collecting Colour of NYC.
