Artist Bio / Statement
My name is Allison and I'm an ice/snow dye artist in Crested Butte, Colorado. I discovered ice-dyeing in August 2023 and have been dyeing almost everyday since. I really can’t imagine life without it now. Things I love about ice dyeing are:
1) I love working with ice, and especially love working snow in the winter (we have snow for 7 months/ year)
2) Ice dyeing is never predictable due to the nature of working with melting ice + snow
3) Ice dyeing forces me to give up control as soon as the ice hits, so it feels like I’m working with the universe
4) Ice dyeing requires patience - I prefer to batch my dyes for 36 - 48 hours for the most vibrant colors
5) The challenges that come with ice dyeing are what create the most incredible color splits and flows
6) Waking up on rinse-out days is akin to waking up to go skiing on a powder day!
Right now I’m focused on making super unique hoodies, especially reverse dye hoodies. That’s probably because reverse dyes involve even more steps and working with heavyweight hoodie fabric presents its own set of challenges. I’m apparently a glutton for punishment. And I also love a really good hoodie, so why not strive to make really cool one-of-ones?
I also make crewnecks, dresses, collared shirts and ponchos but always seem to be working on a couple of hoodies regardless of the season.
One more thing i love about ice dyeing is that I truly believe when I’m dyeing it’s for a specific person, I just don’t know who yet. When one of my dyes finds their person it’s one of the best feelings in the world!
