Secrets for Carefree Knitting, issue #505
Today, class, let's talk about ball winding!
Yarn comes in two different forms:
"Pull Skein" -- this is a ready-to-go bona-fide ball of yarn. No winding necessary. You can take the end that comes from the center or the outside; either one will work. Some of us prefer the center end -- the ball doesn't bounce around.
"Reeled Skein" -- this is a loose coil of parallel strands of yarn. It comes with one or two ties that are sacred: they keep the yarn in order and untangled. These skeins should be wound into balls before working with them. The secret to a happy winding experience is to respect those ties. Put the open skein carefully onto a skein holder, seriously examine the skein for strands that cross over the ties, and only then do you cut off the ties. The ties are the only way to tell if there are any wayward strands, and we all know those can turn ball winding fun into ball winding frustration. Why do they sell yarn in reeled skeins at all? I've been told that it's better for the yarn, since it's under no tension. So... if you're storing yarn in reeled skeins, take advantage of this and keep them loosely twisted.
