Artist Bio / Statement
Growing up around boats and sailing to distant locales have influenced Carol's artistic style and themes. Mother Nature in all her mercurial forms inspires Carol's artistry as she interprets sea, sky, flora, and fauna in her work, literally and figuratively. The silk/dye combination can be a very impressionistic, loose medium or quite controlled. Combining those methods along with endless experimentation keeps her work vibrant and ever-changing. The results are often surprising, but never disappointing. Carol is an active fiber artist who has enjoyed a long career of creating art quilts. New techniques and materials emerge quickly and with them, her inspirations flourish. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and continues her artistic journey through workshops and classes in a variety of mediums.
She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1979 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Immediately after graduating she began to create her own combination of techniques with hand-painted and quilted fabric pieces. Over the years this technique grew to include the use of the Japanese “gyotaku” method of fabric printing using real fish. A major body of her work was centered around this technique. Her art has been featured in galleries in Maryland and the Bahamas and sold to clients internationally. Carol is currently working with hand-dyed silk scarves to create wearable art. Her scarves are available at the Archipelago Store in Rockland, Maine, though her website atfoxrunstudios.com, or at her own Fox Run Studios, in Rangeley, Maine where she works and lives with her soulmate and partner in creativity, Tom Sullivan, and their malamute, Morgan.
I've been buying from Dharma trading for 25 years and I guess that says something right there about them having what a silk artist needs! Great customer service, technical help, and an incredible selection of products make them the go-to company for me. I use DuPont silk dyes for all my work and find them to be brilliant and reliable. Thank you, Dharma trading, for providing the necessary resources for my artwork.
