Handwoven Cotton Scarves and Shawls

We found a small village on the island of Java in Indonesia where the men handweave these cotton scarves and shawls on handmade wooden looms. The intricate openwork patterns have been handed down through the generations, father to son.

The natural cotton thread is purchased in big “hanks” and wound onto spools using old bicycle rims. The loom is then “dressed” which is very time consuming. The weaving itself then goes relatively quickly. We are getting them in 7 patterns, each in 3 sizes. Being completely handmade, the charm is in the irregularities and the sizes are approximate. They can be dyed and tie-dyed with our Fiber Reactive dyes into any of 100+ colors. Because of how long they take to make and get here, we can’t be sure they will always be in stock, so get ‘em while we got ‘em.

For those interested, we’ve received a message from the head weaver expressing their appreciation and thanks to Dharma for our orders as it means a lot to the well-being of the village.

Small vertical stripe. This is a moderately closed weave, with fine 2-ply yarn, composed of vertical 1/2" stripes of alternating loose and closed weave. No open spaces. Twisted fringe.
Horizontal shadow plaid. A fairly closed weave, with singles yarn, comprised of 3/4" horizontal stripes of alternating dense and loose weave, and more subtle vertical stripes of the same width. The scale of repeat is 1.5" square. Loose fringe.
Medium lacey stripe. Vertical 1" stripes of smooth weave interchanged with same-size stripes of a lacey pattern. The overall effect is fairly closed, and the yarn is a 2-ply. Loose fringe.
Big open check. This is a very open but crisply defined pattern, with 1/2" open spaces. The scale of repeat is 1.5" square, and it's woven with 2-ply yarn for a smooth look. Loose fringe.
Medium hazy squares. The singles yarn used for this design imparts a soft look. The scale of repeat is about 1.75" square, and the weave is fairly closed. Loose fringe.
Big plaid. Stripes of 4" open weave alternate with stripes of 4" solid weave, intersecting in both directions to form a large-scaled plaid. The overal effect is moderately open. Yarn used is fine 2-ply. The open spaces are 1/2" squares. Loose Fringe.
Open diamonds border. A closed weave is bordered by several wide rows of open diamonds, about 1"x.5" each. Most of the scarf is done in a drapey, filled-in weave, and the yarn is 2-ply. Loose fringe.
