Basic Tips for Batik

• Choose the Right Fabric: Natural fabrics like cotton and silk work best for batik as they absorb the wax and dyes well.
• Use High-Quality Wax: Beeswax or a mixture of paraffin and microcrystalline wax is commonly used. Make sure it's clean and free from impurities.
• Wax Application: Apply the wax using a tjanting tool, a brush, or even a stamp. Ensure the wax completely covers the areas you want to resist the dye.
• Layering Wax: For multiple colors, apply wax in stages. Start with the lightest color and gradually work toward the darkest, applying wax to each layer before dyeing.
• Drying: Allow the dyed fabric to dry completely before applying additional layers of wax or different colors. Hang the fabric or lay it flat.
• Removing Wax: After completing your design, remove the wax by boiling the fabric or ironing it between layers of absorbent newsprint. The paper will absorb the melted wax, revealing your final design — note that ironing can leave some residue.
