My name is Barb Bloom. I live in Parma Ohio and share a studio with my husband Steve in downtown Cleveland. I have always loved art, but spent much of my life in a business career, with art as my outlet on the side. I worked for a hospital that had a wonderful art therapy unit to help traumatic injured people recover. They offered classes to employees so I attended them- each featured an artist teaching their medium. Silk painting was not something I had given thought to but it was instantly something I fell in love with. That was 2002- fast forward to 2010 the hospital eliminated my job and I turned to art to pay my bills… it took a few years to improve on the fine motor skills, improving my designs, and details. I love art Noveau, and Art deco, with a bit of Arts and Crafts design. I was trying to pick an artist of the era each year and try to paint my version of their work. The first was Gustav Klimt’s and his portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer (the woman in gold), then Alfred Mucha’s illustrations of women, William Morris strawberry thief. Currently I am painting a series if old French botanical posters that include two type of flowers and an insect arranged in art Noveau esthetic. I also paint pet portraits on silk for framing, or turned into decorative pillows.
I love using the pebeo gutta resist because the tubes flow so nicely, allowing me to get more detail in my work. And I use dyna flow because of the vibrant colors they offer. Of course Dharma is my source for habotai silk. (I tend to buy the machine hemmed scarves.
The work I put into my scarves is a jiy and a nice diversion from the world- but I especially love when customers react to the scarves by purchasing them and wearing them.
