I am a German native, moved to the U.S. 10 years ago, and was surprised that painting on silk was pretty much undiscovered back then. I imported ties, scarfs, paint and gutta from Europe as often as I could to be able to continue with this wonderful hobby. Ever since I provided all of my male (and even some female) friends and family members with ties, they encouraged me to start selling them. While the market back in Germany was pretty satisfied, I received (and still do receive) quite some interest here in the U.S.
Inspired by artists like Hundertwasser, Miro, Picasso, Niki de Saint Phalle, Klimt and others, I just love the challenge to put an idea, often inspired by a big name, on such a small piece of silk. I really get a thrill out of filling in the (gutta) outlines with paint, and I just enjoy how everything just seems to fall in place. And, as you can see, I am not going for neutral colors too much - I love men who are brave enough to wear such an eye catcher... and there are more every day :)
I sell my ties here in town (Asheville, NC) and online on Etsy (Artgoesfashion) and there is not much else that I enjoy more than silk painting. I usually paint with Pebeo silk paint and gutta.
