Chrissy Wai Ching Leung

I am a designer/textile artist. I use Procion dyes and most of the silks that Dharma carries. I sell custom couture and ready-to-wear garments from my studio, in boutiques nationwide, and online.
I approach all my creations as organic beings, each with its own independent rhythm and spirit. Due to the precise, technical, and intricate constructions of each piece, exhaustive drafting is part of the planning process. However, there are also many spontaneous and unplanned elements that occur as I allow my materials to speak to me.
Silk is my medium of choice because of its sumptuous feel and endless versatility. I begin with white silk and hand-dye and/or paint/overdye it. Manipulating the silk into different textures and forms is an important part of my artistic expression.
I was trained in Chinese traditional arts in Hong Kong, as well as in art and design and textile technology in the United States. The teachings from each school is shown throughout my work, as well as the mola-style quilting my Puerto Rican grandmother taught me as a child.
I look forward to continuing to blur the line between art and fashion, as well as eastern and western art and philosophy.
