I began my fabric journey by making my first order with Dharma Trading Co. over 17 years ago... a starter set of Sennelier's Dyes. I have since worked my way through the catalog, trying every dye and technique that has interested me. I have received helpful instructions from the staff in the use of the products and have been provided with plans to build a stove pipe steamer. In recent years, their website has been filled with tutorials and How-to-instructions. I started by practicing and then gradually developing my designs - fish scales, sunsets, water fabrics - using the dyes like watercolors; a direct painting technique, not vat dyeing.

"The Mermaid" is a culmination of many dyeing techniques and products: Batik, Shibori, Shiva Paintstiks (fish tail & fin), Air Pen (fan coral & shells), Violet/Gold Lumiere, Organza (hair), glazes of Gold & Copper Shimmer, (head & torso is my drawing printed on Charmeuse Fabrisign.

"The Mermaid" is the center panel of a quilt I'm designing for my granddaughter, Annie. As for quilting, I came in the back door by designing hand-dyed fat quarters (Pimatex Cotton) for Creative Stitches. I made my first quilt with those fat quarters, and I was hooked. I started taking classes, custom dyeing fabrics for the applique classes, and designing Silk & Cotton for my own projects.

Whatever I conceptualize, the products to complete it are just an order away. Thanks Dharma!
