Gus Butcher

Gus was born in Austria, but educated in England. He was a civil engineer by profession, but his preference was for painting. So he started painting on silk in 1987, which he found more challenging than other mediums. He moved to Key West, Florida in 1991 to further this artform, and soon became a member of the local art community, being a part of the famous Sunset Celebration, as well as being in several galleries and winning a number of awards.

Known as Silkgus, he paints both art to wear and art to frame. He has been using Dharma products exclusively since 1991, painting with Procion Liquid H dyes, Pebeo Gutta resists, on pre-hemmed silk scarves, sarongs, etc. For fine art paintings, he prefers to use Silk Charmeuse (Crepe back silk satin). All other requisites also come from Dharma, be it pins, brushes, dye fixative etc.

Gus now specializes in lightboxes, back-lit silk paintings in special frames, which bring the already brilliant colors to a special vibrancy.
