OB Tie Dye

I’m Jamie Peterson, the artist behind OB TIE DYE—a San Diego-based brand where everyday style meets creative color combos and laid-back beachy vibes.

OB TIE DYE was born after I moved from Minnesota to California in early 2024. I’ve always loved tie dye—wore it constantly and dabbled with DIY kits over the years—but at the start of 2025, I felt the urge to try ice dyeing, and it was game over. I discovered Dharma’s Fiber Reactive Dyes, placed my first order, and instantly fell in love with the process. The colors, the way they move and blend with the ice, the unpredictability—it all felt like creative magic.

At first, I dyed pretty much everything I owned. Then came the blanks. Then thrift flips. Tie dye quickly took over our apartment, and I was loving every second of it.

With help from my brother at Whitefish Printing & Apparel in Stillwater, WI, I launched my first batch of custom embroidered and screen printed OB TIE DYE pieces. That’s when things started to grow. I built a website and named the brand after Ocean Beach—an incredible, welcoming community in San Diego that embodies the creative, laid-back energy I wanted this brand to reflect.

These days, I specialize in small-batch, one-of-a-kind pieces that blend earthy tones with organic design. While I naturally gravitate toward wearable, muted palettes, I also love playing with bold colors—whether it’s for a custom request or just to see what kind of wild magic the ice decides to create. Ice dyeing keeps me curious and constantly experimenting.

Many of my favorite pieces start as rescued thrift finds, reimagined through dye. It’s a way to keep clothing out of landfills and add a little extra soul to each creation. Everything is made by hand in my San Diego home studio, and no two pieces are ever the same.

Dharma has been such a game-changer for me. I rely on your Fiber Reactive Dyes—some of my current go-to’s are Silver Lining, Dances with Raisins, Amber Waves, Periwinkle, Teal Blue, and Tangerine… but honestly? I could go on forever. There isn’t a single color I don’t love experimenting with. Every new combo feels like its own little adventure. I also use your soda ash to pretreat every piece—it’s an essential step that helps the dye actually bond to the fabric and makes the colors pop the way they’re meant to.

Every order I’ve placed has arrived quickly, and every interaction I’ve had with your team has been helpful, friendly, and full of good vibes. As a small business owner trying to do things right, that kind of support really matters.

When I’m not working my day job as a Media Director at Kose Digital—or elbow-deep in dye—you can usually find me exploring San Diego with my fiancé Collin, hanging out with our pup, flowing through a yoga class, propagating succulents, or chasing down the best happy hours and live music in town. I’m passionate about supporting local artists, musicians, and small businesses—the creative community is what makes this city feel like home. If you live in San Diego—or if you’re ever passing through—be sure to check out my Events page. It’s a curated calendar of live music, art shows, trivia nights, and community happenings I think are worth checking out.

Thanks for giving artists like me the tools and support to turn a little idea into something real. I’m genuinely grateful to have found everything I need to explore, experiment, and share something I love with others.
