Julie Komenda

My name is Julie Komenda . I have batiked since 1968. I originally learned on paper and have recently returned to this medium. I use handmade textured paper. Working on fabric has always been my first love. There is such serendipity in the process! Using dyes I bought from Dharma in the mid-1970s, as well as new products (love the iridescent dyes and gutta!), I have used clothing blanks to create simple, yet elegant, wearable art. I have been fortunate to live near Weeki Wachee Springs, home of the fabulous Mermaids, and feature them in several of my pieces. I also love sports themes and still lifes. My work is displayed in a local restaurant -- kinda like having my own gallery! I have been shown in galleries in Colorado, Oregon, and Florida.

The garments pictured here were done with procion dyes that I still have from DTC. They are still as vibrant as in the photos, and the same dye lot from the 70s is being used today with great results! I now batik on paper with iridescent inks and dyes on handmade paper, silk, old sheets... you name it. I find that the magic of batik is letting go. For me, batik is an act of faith.
