Kate Themel

My name is Kate Themel, owner of Square One Design. My art quilts have been exhibited around the United States in galleries, offices, art shows, and quilt festivals. I have also created commissioned works for customers from New York to San Francisco, and as far away as Rijeka, Croatia.
My fine arts training and experience as a painter have a great influence on my quilt designs. I see myself primarily as a painter, but I may use acrylics, oils, or colored fabric as my medium.
I love using Dharma's PFD (prepared for dyeing) cotton. It works great with reactive dyes, regular and metallic fabric paints, inks, and photo transfer.
Some examples:
Spider web background is PFD cotton tie dyed with reactive dyes. Dragonfly is PFD cotton drawn with colored fabric markers & white fabric paint Magnolias are PFD cotton hand painted with Dye-na-Flow silk paints Sunlight beams (in the tree scene) are painted using metallic bronze Portraits were created using black cotton and light, opaque fabric paints
