My background and education is in graphic design and illustration. However, I only began working in batiks a short time ago. I purchased the batik starter kit from Dharma Trading Company and haven't stopped since. All my batiks are done on cotton muslin. They are dye dipped and fixed using Dharma Fiber Reactive Dyes and soda ash. I rarely paint on the dyes. If I do, I sure to incorporate that dye color in a bath eventually.
What I love about batiks is the way the dye baths blend, creating the perfect color combinations. The process needs to be carefully planned, as the color layers require moving from vibrant to neutral tones. I find it challenging, but also rewarding and meditative. The color combinations are often unexpected. It is a give and take - a working within the confines of color theory, but allowing limitless creation within the seeming limitations.... Kind of like Life itself.
