WHO I AM, WHAT I DO
I am a German social researcher, feminist, online editor of a women's magazine, mother of three, and wife to a wonderful American musician. I came to California three years ago, and our family has lived in Santa Barbara ever since. I have always been passionate about exploring and helping the development of a public recognition for the ways in which women think, care, construct their lives, and make the world.
HOW I GOT STARTED, WHAT INSPIRED ME
Whenever my life took unexpected turns, I started painting. It helped me reshape my worries and my visions of what should be happening to me, to my family, to women as a group, and to the world at large. I painted on paper for a long time – tissue paper, cardboard, wrapping paper, or whatever was at hand. Once, during a 3-week-stay at a health resort for women, I was introduced to silk painting and have loved it ever since.
When I paint on silk, I feel like a dancer. I love the tension of control and flow, of making boundaries and then overstepping them, letting the color and the fabric do their dance.
I call my silk paintings "foregrounds" because they are intended to bring experiences and feelings to the foreground of the viewer. Most of my motives are what I call "ceremonial patterns for women." They talk about our need for sacred female imagery and for women's voices to be heard in today's world. Whenever you see a circle, there is a woman.
Each foreground is one of a kind and comes with a short lyrical text talking about its intention and power.
WHICH DHARMA PRODUCTS DO I USE?
Usually, I paint on the 35"x35" Habotai silk. Sometimes, I also use their 22"x72" scarf format, and I am thinking of creating larger silk panels soon. I use the Marabu silk paint in 50 ml bottles, and the Marabu silk outliner (water-based resist) which comes in tubes of 25 ml and can be applied right out of the pen. I let the paint dry, heatset it with an iron from the left side, wash the fabric and iron it once more, this time from the top.
