I got into painting on silk from a workshop in New Zealand by Jopie Hartland. What fun to watch the colors move over the fabric as new ones were added. My work combines painted silk backgrounds with dimensional silk flowers and leaves made with two layers of 8 mm silk fused together, then cut, painted and shaped to create flower petals, which are sewn to the background fabric. Often the stamens are created with beads or embroidery techniques. Sometimes I combine these with stumpwork silk flowers which have been embroidered with a wire edge to help the shaping.
I use Dye-Na-Flow paints by Jacquard and and Setasilk for painting and prefer 10 mm silk Habotai for the background fabric. In the process of developing the techniques to create the dimensional flowers and teaching them, I have also written a book, Silk Flowers to Dye For.
