Marta Madison

My name is Marta Madison I am a silk painter living in Sydney Australia. I love the colours of the sea and the magnificent blue sky (what we call here "Sydney Blue".) I am fascinated by the way silk paint spreads and moves on silk. I am finishing a series of silk paintings of flowers, which has been a liberating experience for me, as the silk is quite an unusual medium. With a few strokes and spraying with water, the colours blend and swirl to create unexpected pleasures and effects..

I started off with silk paints (sourced from DharmaTrading.com) and the benefit of these is the fact that they can be iron-set with steam. My next focus will be purchasing a range of French dyes, which are more vibrant but require steaming in a purpose-built for several hours to set the dye. I am investigating the use of a bamboo steamer— the stove-top option is quite attractive for the convenience and low cost of the apparatus.

I recently held a class and the wonderful pieces that came from the tutorial amazed everyone. The student becomes the teacher…I learned so much from the experience.

I have deep oriental influences in my work harking back to the simple exquisite designs of the Japanese artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. I use products exclusively from Dharma trading and after completing a series of larger paintings, I am now embarking on silk scarves using my new silk dyes.
