Mathangi Sundararajan

Mrs. Mathangi Sundararajan has been involved in the art of batik since the year 1968. She has been learning and teaching Batik ever since in India, as well as in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the United States. She learned the craft form in the beginning, and when in India, batik took a new shape as an art; she had the opportunity to work with her teacher, Mrs. Uma Batnakar, who was a famous batik artist of the time. Later, Mathangi herself took it as her main media and published articles and put exhibitions of her own and her students' art pieces. She got her masters degree in Art administration in Turabo University, her thesis being "Spreading batik the Indian traditional art in Puerto Rico." She has conducted batik workshops and demonstrations in the Museum of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and in the Art Museum in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She has been teaching batik and giving workshops during summers in the Community School of Music & Art in Mountain View, California, apart from teaching the art to the local community. She also teaches tie-dye to her batik students to add variety to her art.
