Mel Beach

Mel Beach is a San Jose, CA based quilt artist, teacher and lecturer, who breaks away from tradition by adding her own modern, beautifully textured, and colorful twists. Mel's quilts have been exhibited locally, juried into national quilt shows and traveling exhibits, published in books/magazines, and earned awards/ribbons.

Mel's current series of Hand Dyed Mandala Quilts combine her love of fabric dyeing, mandala designs, and free-motion quilting. Each mandala starts with Pimatex Cotton PFD that is folded and hand dyed using Dharma's Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. Intricate mandala designs are then stitched onto the fabric through free-motion quilting. Mel thoroughly enjoys the meditative nature of quilting each Wholecloth mandala quilt and takes an improvisational approach to her design process, which eliminates the need for preplanning and/or marking. Starting in the center, she simply stitches one ring at a time, drawing inspiration from the patterning created in the dyeing process and previously stitched mandala rings.
