Dyeing Desires

My name is Merina Thomas and I make tie dye art! I have always loved bright colors and decorating my own clothing. Kaleidoscopes and the flow of colors in nature fill me with childlike joy. I have always been drawn to anything resembling batik and tie-dye clothing on store shelves, but I was always frustrated at how the white parts got muddy when I washed them. I tried a few tie dyes of my own using craft store dyes but the results were weak and faded so quickly so I didn't continue on until I encountered an amazing tie dye artist on Tik Tok (shout out to Dyeing Light Creations) who told about Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. One try and I was hooked! These dyes are brilliant and permanent and allow whites to stay white! (once I learned the right wash-out technique, that is!)

I started using procion dyes in June of 2021 and have only had time to dye once or twice a month. I am a parent of two teenagers and a public school teacher so my work weeks leave little time to create, but I dye on weekends and holidays as much as I can and I have spent a lot of time reading message boards and watching Youtube tutorials to learn new techniques and skills over the last year.
