Nadina Barnes

I am Nadina Barnes from Abiquiu Friends Textile Studio. I have been ordering from Dharma for about 20 years and love your company. I dye silk scarves, cotton fabrics for quilters, and recycled clothing. I mostly use procion MX , but sometimes I pull out setacolors and sunprint. My silk scarves are dyed and then discharged with Jacquard discharge paste. My newest venture is Upcycled Artwear. I shop garage sales and thrift stores for quality linen, silk, and cotton clothing and then use my dyes and sewing skills to make them really special.
I am blessed to live in Abiquiu NM next to a river and a red rock hill. I am inspired by the colors all around me in the rocks, earth, plants and animals. I am especially interested in petroglyphs and have incorporated petroglyph designs into many of my pieces. I dye silk scarves 1-3 times using ties and scrunching them into ladies stockings for resist and then discharge on darker areas. I love the idea that the petroglyphs were made by removing a layer of rock patina and I am removing dye for a similar effect.
I am also experimenting with versatex to silk-screen and stencil.
I often work with kids and teach dyeing, sewing , and quilting in collaboration with the Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center (EVFAC).
