Nicole Frost

Hello, my name is Nicole Frost, and I'm addicted to fiber. I started knitting in 2008 and shortly thereafter stumbled upon my first skein of hand-spun yarn. I was in heaven, there was something so magical about knitting with yarn that had the creative energy of another human being in it. Each stitch was different, and the finished item was completely unique. For Christmas that year, my Dad bought me a spinning wheel because he saw me failing miserably in my attempts to drop spindle yarn. And thus, my yarn business was born.
In those early days, I bought mill ends from a fiber supplier (very scratchy, like a rope) and taught myself to dye with Kool-Aid and food coloring. It wasn't glamorous and the end product was not what I had imagined. Thankfully, I found Dharma Trading and their large selection of acid dyes. It was affordable enough that I was able to buy a decent range of colors and start learning how to properly clean and dye fiber in prep for spinning. I especially love the fluorescent lemon and fluorescent fuchsia - they glow like crazy under a blacklight and I've had a lot of fun creating 'galaxy' themed yarn with glow elements. My favorite thing to do is create yarn based off of a picture of, say, an island, sunset, or nebula. My favorite part about creating yarn is seeing what someone else makes with it. Usually by the time I've finished spinning there have been 8-12 hours invested between dyeing, carding, and spinning it. Sometimes I run out of creative juice and can't see beyond a hat, scarf or cowl.
