Rafiu Mustapha

I got my inspiration from the great city of Osogbo in Nigeria, which is known for its art excellence. I was thinking about how I can share my experience and my culture with people in the other parts of the world that have been mislead by those people who don't know anything about Africa. I'm not afraid to express to the world my self politically, morally, or mentally through my art mediums. I was born and raised in the indigenous culture of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, which has enhanced my ability, as well as my strength in addressing a problem at any point in time without been afraid of what is going to come out of it.

The Osogbo artist movement began in the early 60s with a group of talented and energetic artists like Twins 77, Jimoh Buraimoh, and Rufus Ogundele, to mention but a few. These aforementioned artists and the rest travel all throughout European countries and in America to share their experience, and their endless effort has given birth to many generations of artists in Osogbo, myself being one of them. Unlike most of the young Osogbo artists, I'm not afraid to break with the past to express present day concern. While indebted to the best known first generation Osogbo artist for my initial artistic inspiration, I have, over the years, tried to develop a style all on my own. Personal experience, and in particular, the opportunity to travel to the United States, have made significant impacts on my work.

The wisdom that comes from my tradition is so great that elders speak of it through proverbs, saying that one must develop the wisdom to understand. My intent is to bring Africa closer to people in a way that does not have a stigma attached to it. The African culture does not have to be seen in an exotic sense; it is for everyone to share and understand. Through my artwork, I hope to help people understand my culture. Art is my life, and I can't do without it. What about you?
