Shabd Alexander

Shabd Simon-Alexander is an internationally renowned dye artist with a background in fine arts. She began tie-dyeing to create fabrics to enhance her clothing line, shabd, which has since been carried in high-end boutiques and art museums worldwide. The collection is produced in the garment district in New York City, and she dyes all of her fabrics by hand in her Brooklyn studio.

Shabd has collaborated with various designers, organizations, and artists, including a design collaboration with Baggu, a custom tote bag for the Whitney Museum, and a collaboration with the artist Georgia Sagri on an installation for the 2012 Whitney Biennial. She has been featured in countless books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs, as well as in TV and film.

She teaches hand-dyeing, tie-dye and shibori in New York, and was the first person to show Martha Stewart how to tie-dye. She has also thrown tie-dye parties and large-scale crash course workshops in New York, LA and Berlin.

Her first book, Tie-Dye: Dye it, Wear it, Share it, was released in June 2013. All of the projects in the book can be made using the Dharma Fiber Reactive Procion dyes, which work for tie-dyeing, tub dyeing, and even hand painting. Tie-Dye: Dye it, Wear it, Share it, can teach you everything you need to know about the history and techniques of tie-dye and help expand and improve your dyeing skill set.
