Transferring Designs to Fabric

Putting photos and artwork onto fabric is becoming ever more popular and easier and easier to do with advances in technology. Now, anyone can do it — young or old.

There Are Several Options Depending on What You'd Like to Do

1. Print Photos or Artwork onto Transfer Paper

Use a computer and an inkjet or bubble jet printer to print your image, then iron or heat press it onto fabric or clothing. Papers for light and dark clothing can be found here: Inkjet Transfer Paper.

2. Print Photos or Artwork Directly onto Fabric

This requires a computer and an inkjet or bubble jet printer. The size of the fabric you can print on is determined by your printer — some only accept 8.5 x 11" sheets, some also take 8.5"-wide rolls in "banner" mode, and wide format printers can go even larger. To get good, permanent results, the method you use depends on your fabric type.

For Silk:

• Bubble Jet Set — Dip your fabric into this liquid, iron onto freezer paper, print on it, then remove the paper.
• Print on Silk — Does not require steam setting. Treated silk fabric with a removable paper backing. Just put in printer and print. Available in 8.5 x 11" sheets as well as rolls in several silk type, width, and length combinations.

For Cotton or Rayon:

• Bubble Jet Set — Dip your fabric into this liquid, iron onto freezer paper, print on it, then remove the paper.
• Print on Cotton — Treated cotton sheeting fabric with a removable paper backing. Just put in printer and print. Available in 8.5 x 11" sheets as well as rolls in several fabric type, width, and length combinations.

3. No Computer? If You Have Access to an Inkjet Copier, You Can Use:

• Print on Silk — Does not require steam setting. Treated silk fabric with a removable paper backing. Just put in copier and print. Available in 8.5 x 11" sheets as well as rolls in several silk type, width, and length combinations.
• Print on Cotton — Treated cotton sheeting fabric with a removable paper backing. Just put in copier and print. Available in 8.5 x 11" sheets as well as rolls in several fabric type, width, and length combinations.
