The days of hand rolled scarf hems may be numbered. The number of workers that have the skill and willingness to hand hem thousands of scarves is decreasing (They are getting older, and the young folks in China don't want to do it). And these days scarves can be hemmed faster and cleaner with machines.

These are a medium weight silk with a great drape and flow. Silky with an extremely smooth shiny top surface, this is what many people think of when they think "silk". Nice when you want something more luxurious and less sheer, but still economical. The lustrous satin surface is wonderful for painting!

We recommend, especially if you are re-selling, to pre-wash in Hot water and Synthrapol or our Professional Textile Detergent, all silk before dyeing or painting to remove any leftover residue from the silk worms (Seracin) or finger prints and other stuff that can cause the fabric to dye unevenly. Our product Milsoft is excellent for restoring the soft hand to silk after dyeing.

The Satin scarves take dyes really well and have a beautiful sheen that really brings out the colors. Much more luxurious than Habotai.Easier to iron and less likely to unravel than the rolled edges but tend to have stray threads that can be cut off. They do sometimes have minor weave defects so I hold them up to the light and carefully look over each scarf saving the best for designs with solid colors and using the rest for designs with a busy pattern.I've found prewashing with synthrapol won't help at all with silk gum. It's much more effective to have a diffusant in your dye so if you're using Jacquard silk dyes add PTD or Synthrapol 1:50 to your dye andor Alcohol 1:5. The French dyes already contain diffusant.

Can I give them 6 stars? I use these scarves for ice dyeing and they are fabulous! The 8x54 inch length is a good size for folks in my rather conservative area and the more substantial richer silk really manages the color deposits well. I use Procion dyes for my ice dyeing and they work wonderfully on this fabric - just remember that blues & greens can look very different on silk than they do on cotton. I love the surprises I get from that color shift but I'm not concerned so much about control when I'm dyeing. For me it is all about the magic - a control freak has no business playing with ice dyeing anyway. )
