Transfer Paper Helpful Hints, Tips, And Tricks

Helpful hints when using Transfer Paper

  • Always test print your image on regular paper first to help determine if the size, formatting, color, and print settings are what you want. (it's best to use relatively full ink cartridges so the colors are distributed equally).
  • Let the transfer dry completely before you touch it. It'll smear when wet.
  • Remember to trim off the excess paper as close as possible to the image to avoid an "outlined" look.
  • IJP, IJOP, Transfer Papers are best used on flat non-stretchy fabric jersey, and flat wovens are best (If you do try and transfer on rib knit, stretchy or rough surfaces your transfer will likely distort or crack and could peel off).
  • IJSP works best on jersey (t-shirt) fabric. If used on woven fabrics it will have a stiffer hand than on jersey
  • Be sure there are no surface treatments on the fabric that inhibit the paper from sticking to the surface of the fabric.
  • Don't transfer onto seams, hems or any variegated surface, you need a clean flat open area for the paper to adhere to.
  • Always pre-wash and dry the item before you transfer in order to pre shrink the fabric.
  • Use a hard ironing surface not a padded ironing board.
  • Always use a dry iron, use hottest setting (linen or cotton setting).
  • If using a heat press always use the manufacturers recommendation for heat and pressing time as a starting place. But you can use more or less heat if you feel you need to to get a better result.
  • Iron the fabric before you transfer to be sure it's smooth, and remove any lint or excess moisture that might be hidden in the fabric before applying the transfer.
  • Preheat the fabric before applying the transfer - (you can also use a sheet of aluminum underneath the fabric surface to help reflect the heat so the transfer will stick better).
  • If you're worried about your iron, you can cover the transfer image completely with a thin press cloth or ironing sheet before you begin ironing. (Don't use wax paper). Our opaque paper comes with ironing sheets, which can be reused if clean. Parchment can be used as an ironing sheet as well.
  • If you are using opaque transfer paper you will peel the backing off before you apply the transfer. Place the transfer on the shirt face up.
  • If you are using transparent paper you will leave the backing on. Place the transfer on the shirt face down. (your image contains words or numbers remember to reverse your image before you print!) You may peel the backing either hot or cold.
  • Iron from the center of the transfer out to the corners in a circular pattern making sure to press out any bubbles. Don't forget the edges!
  • Iron in small sections for 30 to 40 seconds for each small section. Do it several times, first left to right, then top to bottom. Be patient! Make sure the whole image has been thoroughly ironed. This could take as much as 10 minutes or more depending the size of your design
  • Apply lots of pressure when ironing the transfer-be a human heat press.
  • Let the press cloth or ironing sheet cool a bit before trying to remove it (Use caution the transfer will retain a lot of heat can burn you!).
  • Let the newly transferred item cool thoroughly before you try it on.
  • Wash items with transfers inside out and don't let them sit in a lot of water.
  • Don't use bleach! It'll take the color right out of your image and will break down the transfer more quickly.
  • Dry transferred items on permanent press or cooler settings. Even better if you dry the shirt flat.
  • Sadly, your transfer will fade with repeated washing, there's just no way to prevent it.
