Artist Bio / Statement
My mother sent me to art school from the time I could hold a brush, and I ended up graduating many years later from The Philadelphia College of Art. Since then, I’ve held many jobs and done many things, but I’ve never stopped painting. I fell in love with color on silk in college and it’s always been my favorite medium. Silk does something for light and color that nothing else does.
Along the way to here I contracted a disease that was supposed to be incurable and fatal. That was twenty years ago. What I have to show for it now are severely crippled hands and a powerful interest in how the body works, hence these small paintings that I call Chakra Portraits. Chakras are an Indian interpretation of the places in the body where energy is concentrated.
I’ve done these on the silk handkerchiefs and suspend them, when finished, from small wooden rods so that they can float in the air and share all their good energy. I use the Jacquard green label dyes and the colored metallic resists because I crave brilliance and, thanks to a tip I read on the Dharma site that advised spot setting the colors, set them with Jacquard liquid dyeset, which preserves the white of the silk better than steaming does.
Each piece takes numerous steps and therefore many days to complete, but they are so worth it. Much to my delight, they are featured at local metaphysical shops, as they make wonderful activators of Feng Shui.
