Lisa Kattenbraker

I have been working with batik as my primary medium for nearly thirteen years. I fell in love and intrigued with the medium and the necessity to combine forethought with accepting the unpredictable. Basically a self-taught artist, I learned through experimentation and experience, along with the valuable help of Dharma products and info. I use a variety of products and methods to complete my pieces: from procion dyes to coffee staining; tjanting tools and brushes; Mercerized cotton fabric to burlap; paraffin, beeswax, and potato dextrin; synthrapol, urea, and soda ash to name a few. I use traditional batik methods combined with unconventional and experimental layering and coloring, along with etching and adding foreign materials to the final piece.
I currently live in Virginia and show my work throughout the states in juried art shows, festivals and galleries as i am reintroducing batik as a viable and valuable medium and contemporary American art form (as well as a whole lotta fun!).
