Urea – Keep Fabrics Damp for Brighter Colors!

Fiber Reactive Dyes won’t fix if they dry out! Urea is the secret to keeping fabric damp longer during curing, resulting in deeper, more vibrant colors. It also helps dissolve stubborn powdered dyes, preventing clumps and freckles for smooth, even application.

Why Use Urea?

Dyers love urea for its moisture-retaining properties and its ability to help dissolve hard-to-mix dyes. It’s a must-have for tie-dye, direct application, and silk painting. A little goes a long way, each pound yields about 2.5 cups.

How to Mix

For tie-dye, use ¼ cup per quart of dye solution. For direct application, use ¾ cup per quart of chemical water. Mixing a large batch? Dissolve 1 cup of urea in 1 gallon of hot water, let it cool, and store in a cool place. If it smells like ammonia, it’s time to toss it.

Pro Tips

• Dissolve 1 tbsp of urea per cup of warm water before adding powdered dye for a smoother mix and more concentrated colors.
• A few drops of calsolene oil can help break surface tension.
• Silk painters: try urea instead of or along with salt for unique textures!
