Shelly Burge

My name is Shelly Burge and I'm a quilter and fiber artist. I learned to sew when I was four years old. I started quilting in 1973.

I enjoy dyeing, painting and using bleach discharge to create unique fabrics for my quilts and fiber art. I've written two books on quilting and I've been teaching quilt making classes since 1984. Some of the supplies I purchase from Dharma include: procion dyes, Superclear dye thickener, Soda ash, Synthrapol, Urea, Setacolor fabric paint, and Bleach Stop. I also buy quite a few bamboo socks!

I used the following techniques and supplies to create the fabrics for each of the pieces in the photos:

Snow dyed fabric – procion dyes
Flames & Embers – procion dyes (immersion and Shibori clamping techniques) and bleach discharge
Inukshuk – ice dyed background fabric using procion dyes and bleach discharge for appliqued fabrics
Dimensional Rectangles – painting with thickened procion dyes
Simmering Darkness – procion dyes (Shibori pole wrapped and immersion techniques, also over-dyed commercial fabric) and bleach discharge
Willow Tree – procion dyes (Shibori pole wrapped technique)
Pumpkin Patch – procion dyes (Shibori pole wrapped and immersion techniques), over painted with Setacolor paints
