The Color Farm

We are The Color Farm. We specialize in hand-dyeing mandalas on silk squares, scarves, and tapestries. We buy almost everything we use in our tie-dyeing business from Dharma! Our silk squares (habotai 8mm 22" and 30"s) usually end up as "playsilks," which are open-ended "props" for children's dress-up, imaginative, and creative play. Our silk scarves (habotai 8mm and charmeuse 19.5mm) do triple duty for women as belts, hair wraps, and traditional scarves, and our tapestry sized silks (habotai 5mm and 8mm 44"x108") are used for curtains, playstand canopies for kids, and belly-dance veils. We use Procion MX dyes, soda ash, and urea too, and love the results!

We got started tie-dyeing when our daughter, now three, was an infant. We were inspired by Waldorf educational philosophy into creating playthings for her that were hand-crafted, beautiful, simple, and which enhanced her creative play. Playsilks in our home are a river one moment and a super-hero cape the next, only to become a doll sling and then a sari, all within a few minutes of pretending.

Our desire to bring more beauty into our child's life led us to the mandala, a centrally based symmetrical pattern that has had spiritual significance in many cultures and religions. They are often used as meditational objects due to the calming, centering effect that the symmetry and complexity have on our mathematical minds. A snowflake, the branching symmetry of a tree's branches above ground and roots below --these are examples of naturally occurring mandalas.

Our dream-come-true of being home with our children while we make a living is just made sweeter by the beauty of what we create together.
