Fantastic! That's all I can say. Fabric has two sides, a soft rayon pile on the face with a silk chiffon back. Can be immersion dyed or easily painted on the chiffon back side. Simple painting techniques work the best. Can be used for the Devore technique.

Silk Velvet Flower Bouquet and Headband

Silk Velvet Flower Bouquet and Headband

Velvet Flower Corsage and Headband

a Dharma featured tutorial

Hand made items always carry more weight and sentiment than store bought. We will show you how to make easy and gorgeous silk velvet flowers and add them to other projects. Silk flower making may sound difficult, but it isn't! The results are lovely, and the flowers last forever! In this tutorial we show you how to make a velvet flower bouquet and a headband with a flower. Nothing beats handmade!

Supplies:

Let's get started!

What you'll need

Pre-wash your fabric and if you wish, dye it your favorite color with easy Bread Bag Dyeing.

First you need to create a template you can use to trace and cut out the shape of flower petals. Start by positioning the piece of 8.5" x 11" paper so the 11" side is facing you. Use the ruler to measure a 1/2 inch up from the bottom of the left hand side of the paper and make a small mark. Then, use the ruler and measure 1 1/2 inches up from the bottom of the right hand side of the paper and make a small mark. Use the ruler to draw a straight line connecting the two marks you just made on the two edges.

Next, use the bottlecap to create the petals. Moving left to right, position the bottle cap so the line you made is going directly through the middle of the cap. Then trace the top half of the cap to make a semi-circle over the line. Continue tracing petals down the line until you reach the edge of the paper. Use scissors to cut out the outline you just created. You now have a panel of petals you can trace onto your fabric.

Use bottle cap to accurately make the same arch

Cut out your arch petals

Lay out a yard of fabric. Position the petal outline you created at the base of the fabric so that the smaller semi-circles are on the left hand side. Then use the sharpie to trace the outline of your petals onto the fabric.

Use this to trace onto your fabric

Next, move the panel down to the end of the outline you just traced onto the fabric. This time you are going to flip the petal outline so that the shorter semi-circles are on the right hand side. The idea is to create an outline where the petals become larger as they move towards the middle of the fabric:

It should look something like this

Cut out the fabric below the sharpie line so there is no black marker left on the piece you cut out.

Repeat the above steps so you have two strips of petals to work with:

At least two strips of petals works best

Stagger the two strips on top of one another so that the center of the semicircles on the top strip are laid over the valley of the semicircles on the bottom strip. Here's a photo to better show what we mean:

Stagger the peak of the petals with the valleys of the other strip of petals

Using a needle and thread, sew a running stitch at the base to connect the two petal panels together. Tie off the end of the thread once you've reached the edge.

Running stitch the base of the two pieces together

Take the two panels and begin to roll them up to form the shape of the flower, slowly adjusting the petals as you go. Make sure to roll the panels up so that the velvet side is facing in.

Roll your fabric with velvet facing in

Keep going until you have formed the shape of a flower. It may take some time to adjust and get the right shape. Depending on how you roll it, the final result may look more like a rose or like a carnation. To keep the flower from coming apart, sew the base of the petals together.

Adjust petals as you go and it should look like this

These flowers can be sewn onto anything you'd like! We decided to add them to one of our cotton bunchies to create a corsage, and onto a headband.

I don't know if this is only the recent batch but this velvet listing used to be quite plush. I recently had to order a swatch just to see what the difference was and it is quite a big one-- the rayon pile is shorter and more sparse. It's still a lovely velvet but too thin for my needs.

Ive been buying this velvet from here for years the qualityweightdrapepile thickness are never less than gorgeous good luck finding any silkrayon velvet anywhere for less than $40 45 wide. If youre lucky.Yes sewing velvet to any other fabric specially slippy habotai silk is very difficult but this is true for all velvets. I dont know if polyester velvets are easier to sew but I really dont care and wont find out.As with all fabrics I buy from Dharma the fiber content info is always true. After so many silks that are 100% polyester even after asking in a personal message I know now not take this for granted anymore.Ive dyed this velvet with Procreon dyes with silk dye from the art store with Rit with tea coffee and once even with alcohol marker refills (after an hour in the steamer the color shifted but it has since remained. I dont want to pass this off as a reliable how-to information as this could have easily been a result of pure luck. Im not going to repeat the marker dying method.)If this velvet was any heavier it would be too bulky for the kind of dresses I design I hope it never changes and never runs out!

Initially was disappointed in the very light hand and low nap. BUT After using both Dye Na Flow and Lumiere paints applied to the chiffon side was very pleased with the effect. On the black I painted on the nap side with Lumiere only. The Lumiere must be full strength to get the desired effect I was going for. Still in experimental stages to see how the "feel" is.
