Alpaca, soft and warm like cashmere, but gentle on your wallet. If wool fibers leave you squirmy, you should try alpaca, as it often can be tolerated by folks who are sensitive to wools. That's because the surface of the fiber is smoother and flatter. The smooth fibers lend themselves very well to lightweight, airy garments, like gossamer sweaters and lace shawls. Alpaca Lace is made from superfine alpaca, and has a slinky drape, and is very soft. Try a sharper knitting needle with laceweight yarns so you can feel the stitches more easily.
